Iwaki

Iwaki is situated in the southeastern part of Fukushima between the Abukuma Highlands to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east. It is the main city in Hama-dori district and in its center is an area where modern buildings stand together with old storehouses and residences. Off the Iwaki Coast is one of the best fishing grounds in Japan, where the Kuroshio (black current) and Oyashio (parent current) flow into each other, a fertile location known as Shiome-no-umi. The area is blessed with an abundance of seasonal seafood; sea urchins and abalones from spring to summer, saury in fall, and anglers and crabs in winter.
A marine museum has reproduced the Shiome-no-umi. The Aquamarine Fukushima, which is a new type of aquarium, lets visitors see, touch and learn about some 800 varieties of creatures living in and near the water.
